About
About TrendMD
TrendMD is a content recommendation platform for scholarly publishers and pharma, connecting researchers, clinicians, and readers with relevant academic content across 8,600+ publications worldwide.
What is TrendMD
TrendMD is a content recommendation engine for scholarly and medical publishers. The TrendMD network includes 8,600+ publications and reaches 5 million monthly readers. A peer-reviewed randomized controlled trial published in JMIR showed that articles promoted through TrendMD received 50% more citations at 12 months compared to control. A second RCT published in Scientometrics showed a 77% increase in Mendeley saves, which are a validated predictor of future citations. TrendMD was founded by Paul Kudlow, MD, PhD and is based in Wilmington, Delaware.
Our story
TrendMD was founded in 2012 by Paul Kudlow, MD, PhD, a physician-researcher at the University of Toronto who saw that scholars were struggling to discover relevant literature outside their immediate field. Together with co-founder Gunther Eysenbach, MD, MPH, a pioneer in medical informatics, Kudlow built a recommendation engine that surfaces related articles across publisher websites. The company was accepted into Y Combinator and is incorporated in Wilmington, Delaware.
Today TrendMD’s network spans 8,600+ academic publications and reaches 5 million monthly readers across medicine, science, engineering, and the humanities. The platform’s referrals deliver 272% higher click-through rates than competitors and generate 3–5% more pageviews per reader, reaching 85% of US healthcare professionals.
What we do
TrendMD helps publishers grow their readership through two core products:
Free widget: Our recommendation widget suggests relevant content to current readers on a publisher’s site, helping them discover related articles they are most likely to find valuable.
Paid campaigns: Publishers can promote articles across the TrendMD network to reach new readers at scale. You set the budget and decide the scale—TrendMD adapts to meet your goals and audience needs.
A publisher dashboard provides campaign setup, monitoring, and analytics so publishers can track performance directly.
Evidence and research
TrendMD’s impact has been evaluated through peer-reviewed research, including a randomized controlled trial that showed a 50% increase in citations at 12 months and a sustained 28% citation advantage at 36 months. Independent studies have also demonstrated gains in readership, reader engagement, and reference manager saves.
